Why do people play sim dating games?

What's the major appeal? Doesn't it affect their real-life social interactions? Why do people play sim dating games?
Which kind of sim dating game, the ones where you chat up real people online, the ones where you read about anime characters having relationships, or the ones that are just computer characters having sex?

In the first case, some people are a bit shy to meet people IRL or live in remote places where there's not a lot of options. (Or they're underage/married and can't date properly.) Some internet relationships do lead to real life romance, so it's not so bad.

In the second case - for the same reason people watch movies or TV shows that have romances in them. It's just a story. The weirdoes you hear about on the news who think they are really married to an anime character are one in a million, just like the rare person who thinks they really belong to starfleet and goes around in a uniform all day talking to the space aliens in their heads. Most people who play those games simply like reading. (And some of those games are epically long, longer than Lord Of The Rings long, with huge battle scenes and villains destroying the world and all kinds of stuff.)

In the third case - duh. porn. in which case it affects their real lives exactly as much as any other porn does. Why do people play sim dating games?
